When you think of things around the house that cannot easily be upgraded, cabinets and bathtubs are the first two things you consider in this regard. While bathtubs have to be resurfaced by hiring a professional, cabinets on the other hand can be refinished easily by an average house owner. This also costs less when you compare the costs that might have to be incurred own replacing cabinets.

When you think about re-facing the cabinets, you have to consider whether you like the current style of your cabinets. It yes, then all your cabinets require is a bit of refinishing. However, before you get started you must keep a few things in mind. Check the condition of the cabinets and if keeping them is worth it. Check the drawers and doors for any warping and make sure they can be operated smoothly, ensure that the joints in the corners are tight. Don’t forget to check beneath sinks in case the water has caused any damages from leaking or bad plumbing. Once you have checked all this decide on the better option: repairing or replacement of the cabinets. At times, cabinets reach a stage where they just cannot be repaired.

If you feel that they are in good shape and if you are also happy with their present style, then your fun starts now. This would be the ideal moment to visit the design center for kitchens or home improvement stores. In these stores you will be able to find the finishes and looks that can be found in modern designs for cabinets. Regardless of the look you have chosen, it can be easily duplicated without replacing any parts of the cabinets. Also, go through the available accessories for cabinet interiors. This is an excellent time to upgrade and replace cabinet interiors. They can be replaced by recycling drawers, pull out racks, a lazy Susan, and many other things that are available. Replacing the hardware of the cabinets is also a good thing. This will also help in giving a new and fresh look to the cabinets as well as the kitchen.

When you have decided on the sort of look you would like to achieve, paint your cabinet doors keeping in mind the sort of look you have come up with. When you are refinishing cabinets, use the correct application methods and finish materials, this will give you the optimum results. Prefer going to a shop that specializes in painting jobs only. Also keep in mind that you have probably saved thousands of dollars by not replacing the cabinets. So spend a bit of what you have saved on paints, primers and stains of a high quality. Also purchase some good tools for your cabinet work. You will certainly require some good tools for fixing up the cabinets. Keeping all this in mind you are sure to achieve a good result with an outstanding finish and a cabinet that will endure the wear and tear of daily usage.

The kitchen is the main center and meeting point for most of the family members in many parts of the world. This is also one of the main reasons as to why many families spend a lot of money on recreating and remodeling their kitchens. The facilities which are available in the kitchen might start looking very old fashioned after a point in time when people will decide that it is high time that they got a fresh lease of life. But renovation and remodeling in the kitchen can prove to quite an expensive program and a lot of people spend more than ten thousand dollars on this project. Refacing all the cabinet doors in the kitchen is one of the processes which will help in saving a lot of money while getting the kitchen renovation done.

In many kitchens, it is possible to do the renovation despite leaving the cabinets alone without implementing any kind of change. People who are satisfied with the current condition of their cabinets can just give them a proper full-fledged cleaning in order to make them regain some of their luster. But the cabinets will require refacing when their age starts to show on their surface. The process of completely replacing the old cabinets with new ones is a process which is going to consume a lot of money as well as time since it will take some time to place the order for new cabinets and then get them installed. The process of refacing the cabinets can be completed within a few days and it is also financially feasible.

Once the person is satisfied with the basic cabinet designs then he only needs to reface the cabinets in order to give his kitchen a new look. The current condition of the cabinets should first be ascertained. The condition of the cabinet boxes should be checked apart from the operational capacity of all the doors and drawers. If all these factors prove satisfactory, then it is possible to get the cabinets refaced at a very minimal cost.

All the cabinet doors and drawers will have to be detached from the boxes. The entire surface will have to be cleaned in a thorough manner by making use of a heavy duty cleaner which will help in removing any kind of dirt and grease which has got accumulated on the surface. People who want cabinets with a stain finish should first apply along with stain remover in order to get rid of all the old finish. Light sanding can be used by people who want their cabinets to have a painted finish since this will help in retaining the old finish of the cabinets. But the process of sanding should definitely be performed before the new kind of finish is applied to the cabinet surface.

Once the process of sanding has been completed, one coat of good quality primer will have to be applied apart from two coats of good quality paint which has been designed to be used specially on cabinets. People who want a stained finish should apply stain in light strains in order to achieve the desired look and then two coats of polyurethane can also be applied. Mild sanding should also take place between two quotes.

For several years, it seemed as though every kitchen cabinet in the world was painted in some variation of white or in a creamy yellow color. Then, natural woods dominated the world of cabinetry. For a while, a dark stain was preferred. That was replaced by a preference for something lighter. The whites re-emerged as a favorite. Now, things are different. You aren’t limited to natural wood or pastel colors. If you want a bright green kitchen, you can have it. If you want to make a bold statement, you can install red kitchen cabinets!

Red kitchen cabinets? Absolutely. Red is a statement color. It doesn’t whisper. It yells. Sometimes, that louder voice is exactly what a design needs, too. When you’re ready to build a kitchen that doesn’t try to “blend in” so much that it nearly disappears, you should consider ditching those dull taupe cabinets in favor of a vivid red hue. Red could be just what you need.

Red kitchen cabinets aren’t just for those who want to find a way to create that louder design statement, though. They’re also a part of some popular themed presentations. The “diner look” is a perfect example. Many people would love to capture the look and feel of a prototypical 50s diner in their kitchens. That’s easy to do with the right appliances, counters, floors and cabinets. Imagine what your kitchen could look like with a checkerboard floor, stainless steel appliances and cabinet hardware, a formica-like countertop and bright red kitchen cabinets that match perfectly with the upholstery of those chromed bar stools you put in the breakfast nook! Impressive!

Red cabinets may not be for everyone, but they can accomplish things that colors that are more traditional can’t capture. They can breathe life and character into a design that may otherwise be too safe and dull. They can become part of a larger look or theme, too.

Styles and tastes change. Things that seemed wildly out of place to one generation may be perfect for another. The dark oak stains of the 1970s are an anachronism. The pastels and off-whites that have been part of kitchens for decades are moving in that direction, too. People are looking for something brighter, more fun and even a little dangerous in design terms. Red is the ideal color and highly visible kitchen cabinets are a great place to let the color show.

Red kitchen cabinets make a bold statement. If that fits with your aesthetic preferences and design plans, don’t hesitate to make liberal use of this hot primary color. You’ll create a memorable, attractive kitchen space that’s happy to announce its presence instead of trying to hide somewhere in the back of the house.

European foil products have become popular in the United States as a result of lengthy popularity in European markets and increased attention and focus on conservation and preservation of natural resources. With forest conservation a top priority, and sustainable resources the order of the day, European manufacturers have long been users of simulated wood products and quality foil materials for furniture and cabinetry.

Thermofoil is a process in which a thin sheet of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is fused to cabinetry core material (MDF-Medium Density Fiberboard, plywood or particle board) with adhesives and applied heat and pressure. The resulting surface is smoother and more durable than a traditional stained or painted wood surface.

Contemporary designs are a sure fit for foil products as the doors are available in either satin or high gloss foils, an assortment of solid colors, contemporary patterns, and simulated wood grains. This extensive selection of design options provides virtually unlimited choices for the creation of kitchens, baths, and other room installations with clean, contemporary lines.

Foil products are durable, stylish, and easy to maintain while addressing the growing demand for simple, yet distinctly unique designs sought by the under-40 consumer market. Foils ranging from domestic and exotic wood grain patterns to solid colors in high gloss, satin, and textured finishes provide very attractive, cost effective options for the contemporary, modern or transitionally designed kitchen of today. An extensive selection of colors, patterns and simulated wood grains are available from foil producers in the United States, Canada, Japan, and throughout Europe. Although the quality and appearance may very from foil supplier to foil supplier, the durability and easy maintenance of foil products are fairly consistent.

It is important to keep in mind that foil products are most commonly used in contemporary, modern or transitional designs, but they are available on more traditional raised panel and recessed panel door styles. Typically, foil door and drawer front designs are available with either a rounded edge detail, which has the foil wrapping the contoured edge, or a square edge detail, which has an edge banding material applied. Regardless of the style, the core materials used for foil doors and drawer fronts are completely sealed, thus reducing or eliminating any possible formaldehyde emissions and making the product an eco-friendly option.

Advantages of Thermofoil:

- Seamless covering that eliminates joint movement or finish chipping
- Environmentally sound product with sealed core materials that reduce or eliminate emissions
- Simulated wood grains are color consistent compared to most finished wood doors
- Durable substitute painted, solid colored cabinetry
- Usually less expensive than stained or painted wood products
- Ease of maintenance and cleaning
- Highly resistant to moisture and damage
- Foil usage conserves our valuable and limited timber resources

Potential Disadvantages of Thermofoil:

- Scratches or dents that penetrate the outer layer of the foil are difficult to repair
- Unless precautions are taken, intense heat escaping from a poorly sealed, self-cleaning oven may cause slight “yellowing” to light-colored foils

Regular care and cleaning of foil products with a cotton cloth, non abrasive sponge or microfiber cloth will help maintain a new product appearance. As with all cabinetry, preventative cleaning and maintenance will allow the cabinets to remain beautiful throughout years of use. In addition, the advantages of foil doors and drawer fronts far outweigh the disadvantages, and potential issues can be easily avoided by enlisting the help of a kitchen and bath professional to create your design and manage the installation.

So, your ugly kitchen needs a face-lift!

It’s ok, kitchens age. If you feel your kitchen is stuck in a time warp and is holding your soul prisoner to it’s outdated, worn, drab feng-shui…fret not. We have more selection available to us than we’ve ever had in the history of kitchens.

The choices for kitchen cabinets in Toronto and the rest of North America in general are simply mind blowing (yay Capitalism). Where do you start?

First things first, how much space do you have in your kitchen? Are you willing to knock a wall or two down to increase the space? How will that affect the adjoining rooms?

Once you’ve made up your mind about the space you need, the kitchen cabinets are the next item to consider. They are the focal point of the room, the most functional element of the kitchen and basically the “thing” that every other item of your kitchen “wraps around”.

What you choose will either make or break the deal.

There’s really 3 choices at your disposal:

#1- If budget is the main criteria, drop by IKEA, Lowes, Rona and Home Depot. Cabinets are sold in individual pieces, stock measurements and you can mix-and-match with enough variety to get you from A to B for the most economically sensible option. Downside being, you’re limited in the selection. Box frames are laminated, and your only “upgrade” is usually solid doors. Don’t kid yourself, new cabinets are new cabinets and even with this option you can make a dramatic upgrade to your kitchen so if you have a tight budget you still have options.

#2 – Budget is still a criteria, but you just got a bonus at work:). GREAT! Now your options have multiplied umpteen times (I love “Umpteen”…no math involved). There are a plethora of manufacturers out there that sell stock cabinets using “good” quality materials with enough “upgrade” options to give your kitchen the 100k look, without the 100k price tag. Crown molding, faux pillars, architectural trim, panelling, higher grade hinges/closers, and on and on when cleverly designed can make your new kitchen the subject of envy of all of your friends and neighbours. Consider option 2 as the “gates to the field” have opened up for you. Enjoy the bounty that awaits you in available options.

#3 – Custom Cabinetry…Who are we kidding, when is budget NOT a criteria? But say you just got a bonus at work… Consider this as the gates to HEAVEN opening up for you. The sky is the limit because now we’re talking custom. Not peasant like restrictions of stock measurements/materials (I kid). You can get any material, in any dimension, with custom trim and the highest grade hinges, pulls, closers, shelves, etc. We’re talking hand cut joinery where a single cabinet door can be 10+ pieces individually cut/joined. We’re talking a truly ONE OF A KIND kind of kitchen. NOBODY else in the world will have the exact same kitchen cabinets as you…pfft…friends and neighbours who?

If you’re in the Option 3 category, you need a designer and you need a custom cabinet maker. I’m not going to lie to you, a lot of people claim to be custom cabinet makers. Sure, if custom kitchen cabinets means your cabinets come out looking like 50 other people’s cabinets…not so custom. For a truly unique design, you need a master cabinet maker at your disposal so bypass the showrooms and the big outfits.

There are a lot of custom kitchen cabinet makers, so make sure you look around and try to find a smaller shop with lower overhead. Big outfits function off of production, which means templates and a range of selections that are often recycled and reused. Find the small outfits…That’s where you tend to find better deals and the true “Custom” experience.

Whatever option you choose, planning is key. This is something you don’t want to rush into. An intelligent decision based off budget, layout, material selection and choosing the right supplier can add a great amount of value to your home. Cabinets are undeniably the most important element of any kitchen. Best of luck, may the cabinets you choose bring you years of functional and aesthetic pleasure.

New Yorkers don’t move to New Jersey to have a small apartment with a small kitchen. In NJ, kitchen cabinets are made of fine quality materials, in good sized kitchens, in beautiful homes. As such, kitchen remodeling is common across the Hudson.

Your kitchen should cost no less than 5% but no more that 15% of the total value of your home, with the exception of high-end kitchens for professional cooks and bakers. In the state of New Jersey, the typical percentage is at the lower end of the spectrum, at just 8%.

After the recent economic meltdown the median home price in New Jersey is now around $490,727, putting the average value of a kitchen at approximately $39,258. Since 50% of the budget for the kitchen is usually allocated for cabinetry, the average value of NJ kitchen cabinets is best priced at just over $19,500.

Another consideration to make is in the resale value of your home after remodeling. But since many New Yorkers move to NJ to retire or settle down, the resale value may not be a primary concern.

The actual budget allocated to cabinetry can fluctuate depending on whether your cabinets are stock, semi-custom, or custom made, as well as on the actual quality and materials used. When shopping for NJ kitchen cabinets, however, keep in mind that a percentage of the cost must also be allotted for installation. In New Jersey, you can expect about 18% of the total budget to go towards labor.

To avoid exuberant shipping costs, you can rely on warehouses and outlets in New Jersey that offer free shipping for some of the industry’s biggest brand names. These include Hanssem, Fabuwood, and Ultracraft among others.

Resource Box:

Direct Depot Kitchens is the ideal place to go in NJ for kitchen cabinets. Apart from their extensive showroom, with over 50 kitchen and bath displays, they also have a state-of-the-art design center that offers free design consultations on custom kitchen cabinets.

The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the house. It is essential for an individual or the family to prepare and make their food. This is also the place where we eat. Sometimes, though, we encounter problems with some of the things in the kitchen. One of the most common problems, especially in small kitchens is lack of or damaged storage to keep all the utensils, canned foods and other things that should be in the kitchen. This can be remedied by adding kitchen cabinets.

These are usually smaller than the usual cabinets we have in the other rooms of the house. If more than one, which is most of the time, they are usually installed right beside each other. They have one or two doors for each cabinet, with metal, glass or wood handles. Some may also be locked and some are not.

The questions that might be running through your mind are whether to make the kitchen cabinets yourself or to just buy ready-made cabinets from the store.

Buying ready-made kitchen cabinets is practical for those who have little time and/or those who have little or no experience with carpentry. It is also for those who can afford to spend money for these renovations or installations. With buying ready-made kitchen cabinets, you can choose from hundreds or thousands of different designs, colors, and materials. Besides the stores near you, you can search online for other available designs. The available cabinets for kitchen can also be very beautiful. It is just a matter of finding the right design that will match your kitchen and your taste, something that you will be proud of. Finally, when you buy and have the kitchen cabinets installed, you will save yourself a whole lot of time for other activities. If you have work, assignments or simply want to spend time with your family, pre-made cabinets and the service of a handyman can fix your kitchen very swiftly.

However, if you find yourself in a tighter budget for yourself or your house, and you know how to use tools for carpentry, you will definitely want to do it yourself. Some people who can afford new cabinets might also love the challenge of building something new. Even with little knowledge, do-it-yourself guides are available in magazines or online to assist you. Besides teaching you how to do it, you can look for ideas for designs of your cabinet for kitchen. Through it, you can have highly personalized kitchen cabinets that fit exactly what you want. You can buy new materials or just repair and/or repaint your old kitchen cabinets. If you do not have enough experience building stuff like this, you can hire someone to do it but assist with what you can do so that you will not have to pay so much.

Whether you buy or build your kitchen cabinets, make sure that they fit right in your kitchen or they will be useless. Use strong materials to have long-lasting cabinets. Design the cabinets the way you want, either the traditional way or if you have any creative ideas, do not be scared to try it, it is your kitchen. Most importantly, when everything is all set up and finished, you should learn how to organize more effectively to maximize the space you have in your kitchen.

There is a way to enhance the appearance of your kitchen and you can do that with kitchen cabinet ideas. These designs are lovely and it is durable as well. You certainly find elegance and style in these items. Or you may want to try kitchen cabinet refacing.

For many people the economy has made it a little harder to do large kitchen remodeling projects they had thought about for their homes. If you are one of those people you may be wondering what you can do instead. Well, this doesn’t mean you just have to leave your kitchen looking the way it is and give up on the idea of having a space you love to walk into. Sometimes a small change can make a major difference in a kitchen. So, perhaps it’s time to think of refinishing those wooden cabinet knobs.

Wooden cabinet knobs are very popular in country and old world kitchens. While they can be very attractive and look great they also are prone to a lot of issues over time and use. From dirt and grime that has built up to stains from the oil on hands to paint and stain that is just wearing off and cracking over time, there are a lot of reasons your wooden cabinet knobs can look less attractive than you would like. Now that the idea is in your head you may want to jump right into refinishing all of those wooden cabinet knobs. Not so fast! Take a breath and plan this out before you begin.

First you need to decide just what you want. Are you just going to repaint the knobs? Strip them down and stain them in a natural wood color? There are options here so you need to know which ones you want to go with before you begin. One thing you may want to do is take a look in a few home decorating magazines or in your local home décor store to get ideas for what you can do with them.

Next you need to get to know the material you are working with in your wooden cabinet knobs. All woods are different and some require a little more care than others. This would be a good time to get to know the wood that went into these knobs. If it is a soft wood it may take a little more care and caution to work with.

Once you know what you are doing and the kind of wood you are working with, it’s time to strip down those cabinet knobs. First, you are going to have to remove all of the knobs from the cabinets. When you are doing this make sure to make a note of where you are putting the screws and other hardware pieces that hold them in place. Nothing is more frustrating than missing pieces when you go to put the cabinets back together.

Follow the directions on the wood stripping agent you have purchased to remove the paint or finish. Once it’s all gone make sure to clean off any residue and let the pieces completely dry. Repaint or finish them and once again let them dry. Now all you have to do is reattach them to the cabinets and enjoy changing the look of your kitchen without emptying out your pocket book.

For as long as meals have been prepared in kitchens, there have been kitchen cupboards in most of those kitchens. Yet, in recent years there has been a new emphasis placed on the role of the kitchen cupboard. This is a positive development given that there may be no other cabinet in the home, which is used quite as much as the cupboard. Cupboards must be built in a solid fashion since they are accessed so much.

One part of the standard cupboard, which must be able to handle high traffic, is the handles themselves. The reason this is so is because kitchen cupboard door handles are touched, turned, and grabbed throughout the day.

What is it that constitutes appropriate handles? First, solid construction with both the correct material and the right size will make for good use. Second, are the pleasing to the eye and consistent with the rest of the room? Third, are they agreeable to the hands that touch them throughout the day? The handles being ergonomically safe will go a long way to make the handles useful for many years.

There are currently six styles that kitchen cupboards are being designed and built in for consumers to enjoy. Within each design there is a wide scope of quality, which everyone needs to be aware of when shopping for this product. Some cupboards are hand built and others are not. Painting kitchen cupboards is also either done by hand or by some form of technology. No doubt those built and painted by hand will cost more, but the quality of the product is head’s above the rest.

The six styles shoppers can expect to find are traditional, Outdoor, Country, Old World, Contemporary, and Transitional. What consumers will also find is that these styles mirror those found in other kitchen cabinets as well.

The Traditional style is one that fills the kitchen with a more formal, dressy feel due to the colors and wood grains incorporated. This design will remind many of early American and European architecture. At the other end of the style scale is the Contemporary look. This design has none of the formal sense about it, opting instead for geometrics and more of a random feeling. The Transitional style is a melting together of the Traditional and Contemporary to create a more warm and inviting environment. With the Transitional we have a pleasant match between two opposites found in the Traditional and Contemporary. The Outdoor design pretty much says it all on its own. Next is the Country design with its brighter and more upbeat color schemes. Also in the Country design consumers will enjoy the more comfortable setting this style attempts to foster. The last style is the Old World, so labeled because of its common use of hearths, which are reminders of Europe centuries ago.

Most recognize cupboards for their use in the kitchen as a food storage and preparation necessity, but cupboards also serve another role. Cupboards can also be excellent decoration spots for prized family pieces. Since cupboards often have glass doors or fronts they offer a place to put these items for easy viewing by all.

Kitchen cupboards continue to be used in homes as both functional and aesthetic pieces of furniture. There is little doubt they will continue to serve both of these needs well for centuries to come as they have done in years past. Visit House To Home Guide For many other great kitchen ideas.
